Shikishima Baking Company's (Pasco) Web Accessibility Improvement Efforts Began with Official Site Renewal

What prompted you to consider web accessibility compliance?

The trigger was the renewal of our company website. The renewal focused on 'overall website readability', 'improvement of display speed', and 'enhancement of content quality', but web accessibility was also a theme that should naturally be considered.
Additionally, feedback from customers requesting 'to make the website easier to read' and the obligation for 'reasonable accommodation for private companies' due to the amendment of the Disability Discrimination Elimination Act in April this year were also encouraging factors.

Have you considered implementing web accessibility in-house, such as with your own engineers?

We also considered addressing web accessibility through our own design, but clearing all the web accessibility guidelines from the Digital Agency was a high hurdle.
Therefore, during the renewal of the homepage, we ended up limiting ourselves to what was feasible.

Did you consider other accessibility tools like Uniweb?

We also researched various tools, but we recognized that many were focused on 'developing/designing the site' or 'diagnosing the compliance of designed sites'. As mentioned before, handling this in-house alone was a significant burden, so these tools did not lead to full-scale adoption.

Please tell us how you learned about Uniweb and the reasons for its implementation.

The trigger was a web article from a company that adopted UniWeb for their homepage. Since we were also making progress on our own, we became interested in 'what kind of tool it is?' and started researching it. Subsequently, we contacted your company directly, and upon confirming costs and functionalities, we decided to adopt it as an addition after the renewal of the homepage.
During the confirmation of estimates and implementation procedures, I was surprised to ask, 'Will this cover all sites within the domain?' and 'Will the costs be this low?'. I was honestly shocked at the low barrier to implementation due to its ease, wondering if there might be additional elements that would arise.

Please tell us about the number of days and man-hours it took to implement Uniweb.

UniWeb is easy to implement as it only requires inserting a single line of code, which can be completed in a few days. However, we set a testing period of about two weeks before implementation to check for operational tests and other checks. Furthermore, since the manual was well organized, no special tasks were required other than setting it up using Google Tag Manager, allowing for a smooth implementation.

Do you have any future goals?

Our company holds multiple domains, but the current implementation is for the main domain. Our future goal is to promote web accessibility on all sites we offer. Additionally, beyond the coverage of UniWeb, we aim to provide a site design that is user-friendly, enhancing accessibility for all users.

About Uniweb

UniWeb provides web accessibility features "on the day of deployment" by simply adding a single line of code to all web services.

In order to achieve equal website services for all, we want to put users in various situations, such as those with visual impairments or those who temporarily lose the use of their hands due to injury, in a position to understand correct information through various uses such as voice reading and contrast changes.
