What prompted you to consider addressing web accessibility?

Upon learning about the amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act, which mandates 'reasonable accommodations for private enterprises' set to take effect in April 2024, I felt that our official online store, 'Zojirushi Direct', needed to respond.

Since our establishment, our company has embraced the philosophy of 'creating a comfortable life', wishing for customers to enjoy shopping comfortably in their daily lives. As part of this effort, we decided to tackle the improvement and assurance of web accessibility, prompted by the recent amendment of the Disability Discrimination Act.

We did consider it. However, for web accessibility compliance, we realized it would be necessary to address each page individually, with various required actions, and felt that securing the resources for such compliance would not be realistic for our company.

Initially, there were simple reactions like 'What is the new icon on the screen?' (laughs). However, after specifically explaining who this tool is for and in what scenarios it would be used, and demonstrating its actual functions, I received positive responses.

 

Please tell us about the number of days and man-hours involved in implementing Uniweb.

The implementation involved only placing the code into the management screen, so it could be completed in less than half a day.

After implementation, I made adjustments to the display position of icons, but this was also easily adjustable from the management screen. Personally, I feel that the smoothness of this introduction is the best aspect of adopting Uniweb.

 

Were there any barriers when advancing the implementation internally? I would appreciate it if you could also share how you progressed.

As mentioned at the beginning, there were no particular barriers due to the consideration of the amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act. Additionally, as the costs fell within the initially anticipated budget, we were able to proceed with decision-making smoothly. In fact, we received the proposal around February last year, and we were able to implement it by early spring of last year.

Initially, I was only focused on advancing web accessibility compliance. However, as I began using Uniweb, my understanding of web accessibility compliance has deepened. Now, although we meet the standards, I want to verify the extent to which we can provide effective support to users.

Furthermore, I believe that Zojirushi Direct can convey the charm of our products through unique expressions that cannot be fully captured on product pages. Just like in physical stores, we can innovate in how we present products on our EC site. With the introduction of Uniweb, we want to create a more accessible and engaging shopping experience for our customers.
